The Kings of the Dusk held a meeting
Discussing the last Pyrrhic coup
How many were saved from buckets and smoke
In the battle of the birch canoe

Evensong

The moon is bright and white
Giving to us who hide from
The sun's inquisition.
Then in evensong look for a place to lay long
Lay long,
Lay long.
We whispered in chant of things that once passed
An effigy of unplundered treasure
When suddenly, as if she knew we were wrong
Were wrong,
Were wrong,
She left us.

Kings of the Dusk
04:15
|
|||
Sometimes the shore gets a little too close
As we caplin become kings of the dusk
Aiming for pleasure of the fog on our fins
But really just starting to rust.
The rocks an alliterative grave for
Crabs caught caring
As their shells lay in hundreds, broken
By the gulls who were daring
To dive a little deeper
No, (not) good enough
No matter, they have begun a pointless endeavor
As the approaching shore calls the tide's bluff.
The kings of the dusk but not the dark shore
Now lay helplessly by
As men with beef buckets collect their souls
And the queens, they quietly cry.

Self-Incompatible
02:51
|
|||
You waited a long time for me to drop by
By the time I arrived I was stale and dry
I had fall in my heart and summer in my hair
So I wintered in your arms at the first sight of cold air.
Self-incompatible like the hickory tree
I needed you and you needed me
Last lovers faded quickly as I grew crueler
They became jewels on the crown of a fanciful ruler
Spring came so I flew back to my nest
And settled my heart for a lonesome rest
Planted marigold seeds in neat, straight rows
Fed the finches and threw my scraps out to the crows
Self-incompatible like the hickory tree
I needed you and you needed me
Last lovers faded quickly as I grew crueler
They became jewels on the crown of a fanciful ruler
